In the series, ‘Lobster Photographers’ Stories’, we can get an insight into the lives of our different photographers from around the world.
This week we are sharing the story of Siew Feun Kylemark who splits her time between two very different countries and cultures.
Hi, I am Siew Feun, currently residing in Gothenburg and Kuala Lumpur, and I am an IT consultant/entrepreneur. My husband gave me a DSLR (Canon 60D) back in 2011 as a birthday present. I then started to learn how to photograph and have been loving it ever since.
I am a hobby/pro-wannabe photographer that enjoys shooting when I can constantly learn and discover new ways to photograph. Photography has opened my eyes and mind in a whole new perspective and I am loving it!
I was born in Malaysia but am currently living in two cities: Gothenburg, Sweden and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. My husband is Swedish and I have been living there for 15 years. It was only very recently, since 2014, that we decided to live in both countries so that we get to spend time with both of our parents.
Moving from Malaysia to Sweden wasn’t a problem for me as I got lots of help from my husband’s family, from making me feel so welcome and teaching me the language, introducing me to their culture and food etc. made it a smooth transition for me. The scenery is more grey, due to the weather, but it is so clean, fresh and so different from Asia. I love both countries, so you might have seen some from my landscape pictures.
I constantly have new dreams, from being a chemist to a journalist, even a world traveller. No, I would not call myself a professional photographer, but I am a stock photographer and sometimes I volunteer to photograph for charity events and family/friends weddings.
I photograph basically everything just for learning purposes, but I really enjoy capturing the moment with a little artistic twist. Nature, macro, portrait, landscape are among my favourite genres.
A favourite photo of mine is called ‘Kiss’, I really love capturing the moment in a picture. I also love my shubunkin goldfishes. I was just in the right place at the right time for this shot. Although this is not the clearest shot, it is the “moment” and story-telling scene I love.
I hope to be able to travel to more countries, for work or even charity, to experience and learn other cultures, whilst capturing the beautiful/happy/sad/precious moments with my camera.
For scenery, I want to be in Norway. I have been to Norway a few times on a few road trips and I fell in love with the fjords, the landscape and the beautiful cozy small islands and its society. It is breathtaking! As for portraiture, I would absolutely pick Asia. People always come with a BIG smile! To photograph wildlife, of course it would be Africa! As for food photography, I want to be in Spain, Italy … or any country in Asia… it is difficult to choose just one!
Thanks so much to Siew Feun for the insight into her life!
